Ducktails: Hamilton Road

Although Matthew Mondanile makes chilled out relaxing tunes, the dude is anything but lazy. Not only does Mondanile play guitar for psychedelic beach combers Real Estate, he also fronts his own solo project Ducktails in which he takes a more ambient spin on the beach music sound. Under Ducktails, Mondanile has already released two albums, a self-titled one in May 2009 followed a few months later by Landscapes. January 18th will seen the release of his third album Ducktails III: Arcade Dynamics just in time to help us get through the remainder of the winter.

TROGONS,  mix the psychedelic rock of Jefferson Airplane with shades of 60s garage punk. Brandishing a pastoral aesthetic with song titles like “Heavy Dragoon,” the lyrics aren’t so much surreal as they are whimsical, ripped from the pages of a Dungeons &Dragons handbook. The lead guitar on “Rare Earth Metals” sounds like a trumpet heralding the arrival of a medieval king.

I recently underwent a road trip down south where I spent a lot of time driving through the fine state of Tennessee on a highway nicknamed “The Music Highway”. Given the amount of innovative bands emerging from the fair state of Tennessee the highway’s name makes perfect sense. One of those bands is Nashville’s psych-grunge, noise pop JEFF The Brotherhood, the brainchild of brothers Jake and Jamin Orrall. Given the full sound and energy emanating from their records, its quite impressive that it all comes from two dudes, a guitar, and a drum set. Since their formation in 2006, JEFF The Brotherhood have played alongside such acts as Sonic Youth and Ted Leo & The Pharmacists where one can only assume they held their own due to their powerful sound and swagger.

COOLRUNNINGS, an eight piece ensemble out of Knoxville, Tennessee certainly isn’t lacking in ambition. The group’s roster includes two drum kits, a violin, keyboard and basic rock staples (bass, guitar). I have to wonder though if COOLRUNNINGS exstensive line-up is deflecting from the band’s slightly recycled sound. It’s not that COOLRUNNINGS isn’t musically talented, they clearly know how to play their instruments. They achieve the electronic, psych-pop/folk sound quite well, but that seems to be the band’s underlying issue. Nothing from COOLRUNNINGS is all that original.

Unsigned Italian psych outfit Husband recently attracted the attention of Delicious Scopitone and Get off the Coast with the juddering, hypnotic cut, “Slow Motion” – a slew of tape loops, creepy vocals and incessant drums. Sounded like a death cult meeting in a wind tunnel. Since then a few more tracks have been released through Husband’s myspace, all just as unnervingly addictive, all just as good. Don’t expect them to stay unsigned for long.

As Light Pollution began their October 18th performance at The Rock and Roll Hotel with the swirling dream-like “Good Feelings”, I was pleasantly surprised at the transformation occurring before me. Singer, James Cicero, (who projected a welcoming, but low-key and slightly introverted persona when I interviewed him earlier) had morphed into an absorbing performer the moment the first note was struck. As he switched back and forth between his electric keyboard and guitar, Cicero’s eyes displayed an intensity which mixed both joy and a creative mania. Along with a tendency to quickly jut his arm up in an almost praise like manner, his performance was proving quite captivating to watch.

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly where Jaill fit into the Milwaukee scene. Their music is, of course, genre-classifiable, but it’s hard to find other bands quite like them in the area. Uniqueness aside, the fact that Jaill is making some of the best psych-garage right now is undeniable (in fact, it’s that exact reason that the group signed to paramount indie label, Sub Pop) and their newest release, That’s How We Burn, is tearing up my turntable right now.

“I don’t know anything about these guys. Some kids were skateboarding in my neighborhood to this song on a mix CD that I was able to trade them for. Whoever Painted Ship were, besides Canadians, they had some crazy ideas. To me it sounds like Lux Interior fronting the Byrds or some other early psych group. Really snaky jazz rhythms, big organs, killer riffs, everything I’m into. “Frustration” has this really cool noir feel to it that warps the 60’s garage sound into something decidedly evil. I wish I could go back in time and convince these guys to record more jams. This is the perfect song to put on if you ever feel like someone is following you.”

The Psychedelic post-punk outfit Jasmine Love Bomb formed in the late 80’s (86′-89′) in Lowell, Massachusetts. At their first rehearsal they broke out into a version of Pink Floyd’s “Astronomy Domian” later realizing they had all knew the song prior. They put out a four song tape in 89′ that was somewhat sucessful winning”Tape Of The Year” in The Bob magazine. Their music has also appeared on the compilations ‘A Psychedelic Psauna’ and ‘Fun With Mushrooms’, both on the Uk label Delerium Records.
